Travling to Italy

Jump to last reply

Im traveling to Italy in 5 days, I have been doing mass research and trying to absorb as much information as I possibly can, few things I still dont seem to get, Customs, Where to collect my checked bag & If the layovers will affect where I would collect my bag.
my flight goes
DCA->JFK(5 hour layover)->FCO(3 hour layover)->BRI
Flying American Airlines from DC to Rome then Alitalia from Rome to Bari, will I need to collect my bags at any point during the trip? Will I need to go through customs in Rome? If so, do I need to find my bag there? Or will it make its way safely to my final destination?
Also, Ive never flown before! So any extra information would be greatly appreciated.
