Transfer to Vermont from JFK

Can anyone pls advise me what is the fast route to get to Terminal 5 from Terminal 8 of JFK, NY. I am traveling alone for the first time from Hong Kong. My flight will touch down at Terminal 8 of JFK at 20:10 and my flight to Vermont will take off at 22:40. I was told the transfer time might not be suffice due to custom, luggage collect and security. I want to know the fastest way to collect my luggage and go to Terminal 5 to check in again. I would also like to know what is the minimum time for bag drop for Jetblue. Thanks so much for help.

Fastest way from Terminal 5 to Terminal 8 at JFK is to take the AirTrain tram - trains run every 3 minutes. Just follow the overhead signs once you exit the secure area (in your case when you exit the Customs Hall). Once on the AirTrain it takes only about 8 to 10 minutes to get between terminals.

Yes, you'll have to clear Immigration & Customs upon arrival at JFK. For that you'll have to walk from your arrival gate to Passport Control (again follow the signs). after Passport Control you'll proceed immediately to the Baggage Claim area to collect your bags (they usually arrive on the carousel about 20 to 30 minutes after the plane gets to the gate).

How long it will take for you to get through I & C depends on the number of other flights arriving around the same time as your and your citizenship - US citizens will usually get through Immigration and Customs faster than non-US citizens but unless you are a US citizen with Global Entry there is no way you can "speed up" the process - it will take as much time as it takes.

You'll also have to clear TSA Security before proceeding to your Jet Blue gate in Terminal 8. Again, how long this will take depends on the length of the lines at the security checkpoint the time you are there. Unless you have "Trusted Traveler" status and TSA-Precheck there is no way to speed up this process (although if you are running late a sympathetic official may allow you to the front of the lines but that's not a given).

Since your flight from JFK to Vermont is considered a 'Domestic flight" Jet Blue requires that your bag be checked no later than 40 minutes prior to departure. Go here for more info: https://www.jetblue.com/travel/baggage/

So, you have only 2 1/2 hours to do all this, that is cutting it very close. It's doable but you have no wiggle room. You might want to think about taking a later flight from JFK to Vermont. Make sure you have a Plan B if your flight from Hong Kong is delayed or you simply miss your connection due to long lines.

You might make it -- but you have absolutely no control over if your flight arrives on time, or how long immigration, baggage collection and security will take.

That is a pretty late flight to Vermont so it might be the last flight of the day. (I haven't looked at the JetBlue schedule).

If you do miss the JetBlue flight you are out of luck, will most likely have to get a hotel for the night, and book a new flight for the next morning.

Very first thing I'd do is check to see if there is a later JetBlue flight that night. If not, be prepared to spend the night in a local hotel.

Check for a later flight to Vermont. If there is none, stay at a hotel. Get advice from others on here for that. Take a convenient flight the next morning.

If you are not a US citizen, that is definitely not enough time. If you are a US citizen and/or have Global Entry, you may make it, but it will be incredibly close. Take the Airtrain and hope for the best. Realize that it's a very very long walk from the Airtrain to the JetBlue terminal. JetBlue says they will accept checked bags up to 40 minutes before departure, so you might make it. Make sure you are all checked in for your flight before you ever arrive at the terminal. Jet Blue has an app.
