Transfer time in CDG for different tickets
We arrive at a CDG into terminal 2A via Air Canada at 8:30 am. We are flying out to Rome the same day for a cruise. We are considering an Air France flight departing out of terminal 2F at 12:45pm but will 4.25 hours be enough time to deplane, clear customs, pick up luggage, travel from 2A to 2F, check baggage, and clear security? The next flight option departs at 7:45pm so 11+ hours in the airport, after a transatlantic flight with 2, 20 month old children doesn't hold a whole lot of appeal to us. The transatlantic flight and the France to Italy flight are two separate tickets so baggage will not be checked through.

When is this for? (I'm assuming next spring or summer.)
I see no Air France flights for Rome at 12:45. There's an Alitalia flight (that does have an Air France codeshare) at 12:35, as well as flights operated by Air France at 1:55pm and at 3:45 pm.
All that aside, 4:15 is at least 2-1/2 hours more than you need. It's not a horribly long walk from 2A to 2F, and you can check in online before you leave Canada (unless you're coming down on a dogsled won't have access to a computer on the day of your flight from Toronto.

Yes next summer. Sorry, I must be looking at the 12:35 flight, didn't realize it was a code share since I was on the AF website, does that affect things?
We were planning on taking the dogsled but parking it at the airport is just such a PITA with it. We have a 2 and a bit hour layover in Toronto since we're travelling initially from Edmonton so I'll have ample time to check in online, my only concern is going through customs, picking up luggage and then rechecking it, and clearing security again once we get to CDG.

Is there any sensible reason why you are flying to somewhere 1400km away from where you actually want to be? (Note "we have points" isn't a sensible reason)
What are you going to do if you miss the onward flight? One or both times for the flight may change making a connection impossible, one or the other flight may be delayed.
How much money are you willing to throw at the problem as buying new tickets at walk up cost will the ONLY option you will have if you do miss flights.
Even if you flew direct to Rome from Canada, it's risky to do so on the day your boat sails as you won't be given any help if you miss the boat (except to buy a ticket to wherever the boat next stops)
It's extremely unlikely you will have luggage checked through as AC & AF are members of different alliances and there's no evidence they have any luggage agreement

According to Air Canada's website they DO have an interline agreement with both Air France and Alitalia (and many more). You have to scroll down a bit till you reach the para on "other airline partners" and the link in that para.

That said, it would still be my personal preference to get the whole trip on "one ticket" to be on the safe side if I'd miss the connection (and hopefully get a shorter connecting time than 4 hours).

I don't know anything about hotels in/near CDG but a day room is an option to consider for an 11 hour layover. That would give you a margin of error and a chance for all of you to get some sleep after a long flight.

I'd never (ever) book separate tix in this situation. You must get to Rome in time for the cruise. But AC will only promise to get you to Paris -- not when. If you miss the flight (for any of the reasons dotheboyshall lays out) you are totally SOL.
IF you land on time and IF neither of the flight times are changed, 4 hours is more than enough. But if your AC flight is delayed or either/both flight schedules change (often happens) all bets are off.

Dotheboyshall: we are flying into Paris because we are spending a week there after the cruise.
Our scheduled arrival time in Paris is a day and a half before the cruise departs Rome. We are cruising with RCCL and this is the flight they have provided in our quote. We also have the option to fly Paris to Rome the morning of the cruise but I feel that's cutting it to close and travelling with two, 20 month olds, I'd rather get the bulk of the traveling out of the way in the beginning, hence why we want to schedule the paris-rome flight for the day we arrive in paris and the day before the cruise.

One doesn't dictate the other. Just because one is flying home from a city doesn't mean they have to fly into the same city. It is called open jaw . . . Like in to Rome and home from Paris.

That is sensible . . . but not on separate tickets. You could/should be fine, but any little hiccup and you'll have to buy 4 walk up fares (if tix are even available on the day)

Haha I am well versed on open jaw tickets having done them a few times on previous Europe trips and that was definitely one of the first things I looked at however, into Rome and out of Paris is quite a bit more costly than round trip Paris. At this stage it's a moot point as the transatlantic flight is booked.

Are you buying air through the cruise line? If so, they are responsible for getting you to the ship.
Your bags will be checked through and there's airside shuttle service from 2A to 2F. You only need to clear security.

Not nearly as costly as what you'll pay if you miss the flight.

I read that to mean only the flight from CDG to Rome. If so, RCCL isn't responsible if you don't get to Paris on time. But if all flights are booked w/ RCCL then yes, you're likely protected.

Sorry I had a complete brain fart earlier (how embarrassing 
) and should have said you'll also have to go through passport control in which case it may be quicker to just walk to 2F. Either way you have plenty of time under normal circumstances. Could you clarify if you're buying the entire air itinerary from the cruise line?
