I am flying with my daughter in March to visit relatives in London and my daughter wanted to spend a few days in New York. Is there a better way to do the stop over? Is it better (cost/time etc) to fly syd-london-new york-syd or the other way around? Does it matter at all? Any comments woujld be appreciated. Thanks

In terms of distance I think it's better to go to LHR first and to return via LAX. You might very well do better with an around the world fare.

Flying west-to-east is faster as you have tailwinds - around 2 hours quicker on SYD-JFK, JFK-LHR, and the same on LHR-SYD, so about 6 hours less total flying time on the RTW route.

Nobody flies nonstop between Sydney and NYC, nor between LHR and SYD, so you'd have to stop somewhere on those portions. (On Qantas it would be either LA or Dallas on the Oz < > US leg, and Singapore or Hong Kong on the SYD < > LHR portion. In the case of a US fuel stop, you'll have to go through US border formalities then re-board.)

Gardyloo makes a very good point about flying times (if fares are more or less equal). That makes more sense.

Emirates is running a sale right now, and they fly to all of these destinations, so they might be a consideration, but you'd have to travel from east to west to make a flight on Emirates work.

Check out bestflights.com.au for round the world airfares. They have really great examples of what is possible. I have often use this site as you can see all available specials in each region. Sounds like a great trip

My daughter is going to London from Melbourne and New York . She found it was cheaper to go to London, stay there a while and then go to new York and back to London.Also she has a base in London. This was cheaper that an a round the world fare. O f course depends on time of year and Continental had a cheap fare London

RTW fares only come into their own in (a) premium classes and/or (b) much more lengthy and complicated itineraries than the one proposed by the OP. The Kangaroo route (Oz < > UK) is extremely competitive, as are the main North Atlantic routes, so usually two separate round-trip tickets will be more cost-effective than a multi-city ticket like an RTW.
