Same ticket, Rome to JFK via Alitalia then Delta, baggage?

We booked with Delta, but the first leg home to USA is with Alitalia and as is common, they keep changing flight times. Of course reducing the comfortable transfer times I allowed.

If we check our bags will we have to retrieve them at JFK and go through everything? We can go carryon but I'd rather check.

( We've done a change in LAX before and it was fine but both legs were Delta). If you have experience I'd like to hear. Thanks!

Alitalia & Delta are partners which means your checked luggage will be "tagged" though to your final destination HOWEVER all international passengers have to claim any checked luggage at the point of their first arrival in the US (in your case that's JFK). Once you claim your luggage and clear US Customs you can recheck your bags immediately upon leaving the Customs Hall.

Regardless if you have checked bags or just carry-on you'll "have to go through everything" (i.e,. Immigration, Customs and TSA Security) at JFK before proceeding to your connecting flight.
