Reasonable Baggage pick-up & re-check time at JFK

I arrive at JFK on Delta at approximately 3:30 on a Tuesday afternoon in June. I depart JFK that evening at approximately 8 p.m. for LHR. I am booked on separate airlines with separate tickets. I will attempt to get direct luggage checking for my destination LHR. at my starting point RDM, a small wonderful airport. If II am unsuccessful is it reasonable to plan luggage claim at JFK and recheck with Iceland Air in that time period.

Normally I travel with a 21" and don't check it. This time I am meeting two women who will have been backpacking in Europe for the previous 3 weeks. After a week in London we are taking a transatlantic cruise to NYC. Thus the need for a second piece of luggage, I have their London and cruise clothes. I keep fearing "lost" luggage and no way to get the luggage as I will be in transit to LHR.

If I check luggage I know I will need to pass security again at JFK, I don't know if I need to change terminals. The time difference between arrival and departure is almost 6 hours which on paper appears to be more than enough time to go through the process.

I have considered a private luggage service and sending the extra piece separately. My concern with that procedure is the wait time in London. We have rented a flat and someone will need to wait for delivery instead of enjoying the wonders of London .

So Fodorites what path would you choose, or do you have even a better suggestion for me to consider?
Thanks and happy travels

Simply checking the bag seems like the way to go. You will need to change terminals at JFK via airtrain from T2 to T2. It's easy and doesn't take long at all.

If you have to claim your bag and recheck it you have plenty of time.

Iceland and Delta do have an interline baggage agreement. Show your Iceland itinerary at RDM checkin and have them tag your bags through to LHR.

Delta will not transfer your bags at JFK if you've booked with another airline on a separate ticket. You will have to claim the bags and recheck them. They announced that change in early 2013. Ask at RDM when you check in, but the answer will likely be no. The key is that you are traveling on a separate ticket.

J63 and Jeff_Costa_Rica,

Well you both gave answers, they are just different. But you've settled my mind. I will plan on checking the 2nd piece of luggage in RDM and if necessary will claim and re-check at JFK. I appreciate the vote of "enough time" and info on Terminal Changes. I'll check the JFK website for map/terminal layouts and will be good to go.

Again, thanks for the response and best wishes for fun travels in your future.

The issue here is the separate tickets. If you had booked this trip all on the same ticket, Delta and Icelandair, then Delta at your original check-in would tag the bags all the way to your final destination. But with separate tickets, they stopped doing that in January 2013. Ask at RDM, but you should be prepared for an answer of no.

Here's the statement about it on Delta's website:

http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...and-rules.html

"Baggage will only be checked to the destination on your ticket."

Again, thanks Jeff_Costa_Rica, I am going with the plan I mentioned earlier, ask, check, and re-check at JFK if necessary. Nothing ventured, nothing gained by asking. And I will be extra polite when they say "no" .... ticket counter agents can hear a lot of grief during their day...

You have more than enough time for this connection not to mention a leisurely meal, so I wouldn't worry. You probably will have to re-check your bag at JFK, so be prepared for that. It's an easy terminal transfer from Delta to Terminal 7 on the AirTrain. To be honest, with this much time, I'd actually prefer to check in and check bags for the IcelandAir flight once I arrive at JFK. I don't think this is a bad thing.
