Qantas A380 vs 744 in economy

Anyone taken Qantas's A380 in economy class? Anyone who could compare to their 744's?

We've taken the 744's a number of times between LAX and either Sydney or Melbourne. But with the sale going on Qanta's site, we're getting drawn into booking. Just weighing the routes and need to book in the next day or two.

Seatguru says the arm rests don't go up in Economy all the way. We're booking three seats together (for less than one ticket has cost in the past!). But also heard that the cabin is quieter. The A380 would only get us to SYD, and we'd connect to get the last little bit to MEL (wouldn't be the first time, so no big deal)

So, is the A380 a better overall ride?

The A380 should be quieter and seats should be slightly wider. My boss flew it on LAX-MEL with her infant last year, and she said it was more comfortable than the 744.

Thanks Ray. I'm actually kind of looking forward to flying on an A380 after all the talk. The website makes it look pretty nice (but would an airline make it sound any other way?). So I'm glad you boss gave it a good report. We'll be flying with a 2 year old to go see her nana and the rest of the family for the first time, so hopefully the cabin *stays* quieter...

We'd just been trying to determine if it was worth a Sydney connect on the day we were looking at, rather than straight into MEL on our usual 747. But since I posted, we saw that we could get a freebee stop over in Sydney and decided it sounded like fun and her aunt will meet us to kick off the visit before bringing on the rest of the clan. So, Airbus it is.

By the way... if anyone has always wanted to visit Oz, the sale has until the 19th for flights starting Nov or earlier.

We got 3 tix econ, LAX-MEL w/ 3 day stopover in SYD for 1480 total, all in (we'll use miles to get from STL to LAX and back). We've had to spend well over that on just one ticket before.

And biz class is selling at 2 for 1.

Does anyone know why the Boeing 747-400 is being referred to as a 744 ? This has been a source of confusion for me when trying to book on the seating plan.

747 400 is sometimes referred to as 744 , just as the 747 300 was the 743 or the 747 200 was the 742 in Qantas. Both the A380 and the 744 have good features. I have spent time on both.
