Purchased tickets from Delta, flying on Alaska Airlines?

When I purchased my tickets yesterday for an upcoming trip I purchased them through Delta but when my itinerary was emailed to me it said the following....

Carrier Delta
Operated by Alaska Airlines

So does this mean I go to the Alaska Airlines counter at the airport?

Why does Delta sell tickets and then make you fly on another carrier? Is this common? Never came across this before.

Code sharing. When booking click on flight details to see who's plane you'll really be stepping into. In this case Delta did the marketing while Alaska is doing the operating.

One thing you did not mention was where you were flying from and to.

That would help folks know better the issue.

Its a code share you check in on line with Delta as you booked with them, at airport with Delta if they have section if not with Alaska Air booth, however some airports if your flying international i.e. you booked with Delta but KLM is doing the flight you have to find out both the Delta and KLM number because for some reason they are usually different and you can't always check in on line. Been there done that numerous times even having both numbers.

Phone either Delta or Alaska and get your Alaska record locator (confirmation code.) It will be different from Delta's. Then you can do online check-in using Alaska's website.

At the airport you always check in with the operating carrier.

Okay, thanks. I fly out with Delta for another trip on Monday so I'll ask them directly at the airport.

Code sharing. We usually buy from Alaska and fly AA, or buy from Delta, fly KLM, or...

Yes, you go to Alaska counter.
