Personal item querey

I am a first time flier and i am going to take a flight from Memphis to Washington D.C on AirTran and their site describes on their carry on page that you may have one carry on matching whatever dimensions, all my luggage will be traveling with my family to Washington by car but my work is making me wait an extra day to go, so im not planing on bringing very much on the plane with me i do however want to bring my more expensive items with me instead of in the car just so i know where they are (I know its kinda crazy but that's how i am), their site says that you can have one personal item such as a laptop and case so i have my laptop in the bag and my question is if whether i can put other things in that case with my laptop, the things i want to put in there include my android tablet, my iPhone, my Xbox 360 slim, charging cables for my devices, two books, and a couple of DVD and PC discs. All of these items fit in my one laptop bag without it being very large or cumbersome is this going to be okay or is it just restricted to the bag and laptop?

I think the 1 item (the bag) is the issue, not what's in the bag (assuming there are no forbidden items). I've sometimes traveled with a quantity of camera equipment and I have found that the larger the amount of equipment the more likely an additional inspection of the contents would be. That's the only issue I see from here but not a real problem.

The laptop will have to be taken out of the bag when going through security so be sure you can get it in and out without trouble since you are going to have so many other things in there.

I have traveled many times with what's on your list and more in my personal item and never had an issue.

As long as there is nothing "forbidden" in your carry-ons and they are compliant to the airline's policy on size, nobody really cares what is in your "personal item" and "carry-on".

Agreeing with everyone above. As long as it's an appropriate size/weight and only one bag AND nothing prohibited by TSA... no one cares what's inside it.
