Hi - Any idea why non-stop flights from NY to Berlin, Munich to NY would cost over $4000 when nonstop round trip flights NY-BER or NY- Munich cost about $600 (all in September)? When I try to search for the open jaw option with 1 stop, the flights are back around $600 total. I get the same results on ita.com, kayak.com and expedia.

Check the fare class - could be that the date you are checking has only first class available.
Thanks AAFreq. The flights you found have a stop. I was hoping to get non-stop flights. Seamus, I checked off "cheapest available" under cabin, but no luck. I thought traveling from NY I'd be able to go directly, but I guess not...
Right. The only (major carrier) nonstop from NYC to Berlin is on Continental, the only nonstop from Munich to NYC is on Lufthansa. So each airline regards it as a one-way purchase, and puts you into an astronomical fare class. You have to stop someplace either coming or going, which will reduce your price to something closer to $800-$1200 depending on your dates.
Berlin is not a major European gateway or hub, owing to its historic division. In time that might change, but for the meantime very few carriers fly longhaul services to Berlin, vs. the other long-established German hubs of Munich and Frankfurt.
