One World Pass - How does it work

I'm reading a TR on the Asia board and he says he's using "130,000 American FF miles for One World Pass that allows 130,000 miles and 16 segments. So off I go to Asia in Business Class, getting First Class when there is no business class."
How does this work? And does UA offer anything similar? thanks!

First off, there is no such thing that's called a "OneWorld Pass." Unfortunately, some people are careless with using terminology -- it might seem unimportant, but it can create lots of confusion.

The ticket that NeoPatrick and many others used is a frequent flyer award ticket, called a OneWorld Award. You can get this ticket from any member of the OneWorld alliance, and you need to have enough miles in your frequent flyer account with that airline. The number of miles you need depends on the airline from which you're getting the ticket, the class of service you're flying, and the total number of miles that you fly. There are a bunch of other rules, as well. The biggest obstacle to using this ticket, in most cases, is finding availability of award seats.

In Patrick's case, he got the ticket from American Airlines, he is flying business class, and he can travel for a maximum of 20,000 miles. The price of the ticket was 130,000 American Airlines frequent flyer miles.

United does not offer a similar award.
