Need help planning trip back East
We need to fly business class from San Diego so I can be more comfortable due to a medical problem with sitting. On other short trips, Jet Blue is fine. We want to visit family in Boston, Newark and NYCity (JFK?) and return to San Diego. We have 230,000 miles on AA.
1, If we use AA mileage for the rt between SD and Boston do we have to use the second half of the ticket? It would be easier not to have to fly back to Boston to get home. Or could we perhaps fly back from JFK to SD without going back to Boston? Would this stopover be allowed when I book the mileage award?
2. We can use limos to get to Newark and back to JFK and use Jet Blue and Continental if we need to.
3. We also have Continental one-pass but not a lot of mileage.
I appreciate your help and suggestions. We are in our 70s and 80s so travel is more difficult.

On AA, you can now book each leg separately using mileage at the same rate as a roundtrip ticket. So in other words, where a RT coach ticket to JFK or Boston might have cost, say, 25,000 miles, I think you can now book SD to Boston at 12,500 and NYC to SD at 12,500.
Also, unless you're on a widebody, first class won't have the lie-flat seats. It'll be domestic first, which means a few more inches of legroom than coach and a little wider seat that reclines a bit more.

Even before the recent change on AA, one can always book open-jaw award tickets using miles. In the past, you have to call AA to book it, now you can do it online yourself.
Currently, there is only one daily NONSTOP flight from San Diego to Boston, and it's on a 757. The first class is nothing to write home about - simply just a bigger and more comfortable seat and better recline.
There is one daily NONSTOP flight from JFK to San Diego. It uses 763. The biz seat is much nicer in the 763.
Since SAN-BOS is a shorter flight than JKF-SAN; I certainly would choose the shorter flight on the 757, and the longer flight home on the 763.
There is the Biz/First MileSaaver award available for 25K each leg; however, those are hard to get on the nonstop flights. Go to AA.com and check it yourself. If those are not avail, you can always spend more miles by choosing the Biz/First AAnytime Award seats for 50k each leg. You can mix and match Milesavver and AAnytime award depending on availability.
In any case, the least amount of miles you'll spend will be 25K x 4 (for 2 of you) = 100k miles.
the most amount of miles you'll spend will be 50K x 4 = 200K miles.

We have decided to go to JFK and NY area first, then to BOS and fly home to SAN from BOS. Having said that, do I still look for business class seats for the most comfort in sitting with our ff mileage?..
Thank you

If you want to fly American Airlines, the above I wrote still applies.
SAN-JFK is still a 763; and BOS-SAN is still a 757.
You didn't say when you're going on this trip, but the current schedule on AA is:
SAN-JFK once daily flight departs around 7:40am
vs
SAN-BOS once daily flight departs around 9am
ONce daily return flight to SAN from either JFK or BOS will get you back around 8-8:30pm.
So, depending on how far/close you live from San Diego airport, that early AM flight to JFK can be a bit of a challenge.
Anyway, the amount of miles needed for Biz/First seats on the flights are the same (25K one way for MileSAAver Award; 50K one way for AAnytime Award).
