Luggage transfers

I am flying Delta Airlines from Atlanta, GA to Miami, FL and changing airlines in Miami to American Airlines and continuing on to Grenada. How do I make sure that my luggage gets transfered from one airline carrier to the other.

First, do you know that the two airlines have an agreement to transfer luggage?

If yes, just watch what tag they put on your suitcase at your first airport and make sure it says the code for the Grenada airport.

Since it seems you have booked two different tickets Delta will not check your bags through.

So you have to collect them at Miami and check them back in with American yourself - no one else can do it for you.

Even if you purchased two different tickets, you luggage can be checked all the way through to your final destination (as these are both full-service airlines). Just show your onward ticket when you check in at Atlanta, and make sure the luggage tag gives the correct code for the airport in Grenada.

I thought Delta changed their rules for interlining last year and don't do it any longer on separate tix???

OK - I just did a quick google search and it seems Delta did announce it would quit interlining but then postponed implementation. So <i>maybe</i> the Delta agent will check your bag through. But if s/he doesn't, you'll have to collect it at Miami and re-check it.
