Luggage on Lufthansa

Bought one ticket San Francisco- Venice with changing planes in Frankfurt, first leg United, second Lufthansa. Is our luggage allowance 23kg for both legs? Economy.

(flights within Europe only 20 kg, but our flight is USA-Europe, so we are allowed 23, correct?)

Also, the luggage will be checked through Venice, we don't have to get it in Frankfurt, correct?

Good morning, Dayenu. I don't know for sure about your luggage allowance but I would "think" you would be allowed the 23kg for both legs of your flight. Best to check with the airlines I imagine.

Regarding Frankfurt and your checked in luggage. When I have flown SFO to Amsterdam (KLM) and than on to Venice I have never "seen" my checkin luggage until I arrive in Venice.

Enjoy dreaming about your soon to be trip, it sounds wonderful!

You will get the whole 23kg since you're on same ticket; and yes, you won't see your bags until Venice.

Thank you, both!

L'Italy, would you believe I called their 800 number, and somebody with accent different from American told me I will have to college my luggage in AMS as I am flying different airlines

I so appreciate having Fodor's at my fingertips!

How very inconvenient that you would have to pick up your luggage in Amsterdam when you are flying to Venice via Frankfurt.

LOL Amsterdam was last year, it's still in my mind as a destination, not as a layover.

You're right, FormerRizzuto, very inconvenient

Dayenu, I've changed airlines many times in cities such as Frankfurt, Paris or London and as long as it's booked on one ticket I've never had to collect and re-check bags. Unfortunately I'm not surprised the people at the airline would tell you something so inaccurate.

Wanna hear something worse? A few years ago when the liquid restrictions were new, my mom called AA to ask if she could bring her insulin on the plane. The dumb cluck on the phone told her no, it needs to go into a checked bag!! I was furious that an airline employee would give such stupid advice and I told Mom there's NO WAY she will do that. I thought everyone knew it can be a life-threatening situation for a diabetic not to have insulin close at hand and I shudder to think how many diabetics followed that advice and put themselves at risk. Needless to say when we got to the airport she was allowed to carry on her insulin.

Enough of that nonsense. Enjoy your trip, it sounds great.

I flew Calgary to Vienna, with a change of planes in Frankfurt, and yes, your luggage will go straight through to the final destination - Venice for you.

Thank you, NZ!

Oh, P_M, this would clearly put your mom's life at risk! And complaining wouldn't do any good...
