According to YUL's official website, no need to go through Canadian immigration at Montreal since your bags will be tagged to FRA. Most likely a security screening.
On the way back, since LH uses T1 at YYZ, no need to go through Canadian immigration either. But you will need to pre-clear US immigration and customs. You need around 90 minutes to do so, as the lines can be pretty long, even for US citizens.
