KLM seats and customer service
Bot 2 seat on AMS to JFK on 9/11/12 using KLM website. Used credit card to buy preffered seats (2 across).
Got receipt and itinerary by email with all correct info. Just got an updated email of itinerary with different seat (not preffered and my wife and I are now 10 rows apart.
Called Delta (the US agent) and was told their computer showed I had no seats reserved for this flight either way. They also told me that they had no control over KLM and could do nothing. Eventually the supervisor said that she would change our seats to bring them together and she gave me new seat numbers. She also said there was no mention of the pfd seating that I had paid for earlier.
I just called Delta again and was told that since we are no longer "silver: level at delta our pfd seating was cancelled even tho we had paid for it 6 months ago and we never got a refund or any notice. Furthermore the latest itinerary does not show the change made by the supervisor. Finally, Delta has confirmed that I have seats together.
However, KLM does not have this on their website. It is very frustrating not knowing what is happening. Any suggestons or telephone numbers for KLM directly would be appreciated.
Thanks

I experienced the same nastiness on a KLM itinerary six weeks ago. I was flying trans-Atlantic on Delta and continuing to the Middle East on KLM. All tickets were purchased from KLM and seats were picked out on-line at time of purchase. I checked my data at KLM a few weeks before departure and all four assignments were intact.
None of them showed up on the computers at either of the departure airports, although the gate agents managed to find seats similar to what I had chosen.
That is precisely the sort of airport tension I seek to avoid, and advance seat assignment is a consideration in which airline I choose. It's one reason I haven't set foot on British Airways for many years. Now I have to reassess my otherwise high regard for KLM.
I intend to complain in writing to KLM (mentioning this pot) and suggest you consider doing the same.

<<<KLM's telephone number in the U.S. is 866-434-0320>>>
This is correct (I just got off the phone with a very nice agent there. She couldn't help me, but she was very nice )
(newtome, the number you listed gets a recording that says it's not callable from this country)

I don't know if this will help, and it may be too little too late, but I always print out any seat assignments immediately. I would also print out any confirmation if you paid for a seat assignment in advance. At least you have documentation to make a credible claim.

Just to update. All of the KLM numbers in the US are actually Delta. They cannot deal with seat assignments. Everything must go thru KLM.com website. But if there is a problme as in my case there is nothing thta can be done other than email KLM directly. Now waiting for 10 days for a reply.
However, I eventually got a supervisor at coproate HQ for Delta customer service who helped and got my preferred seats back. I have them printed out as proof. I always do this immediately.
Thanks for all the help.

Just another story illustrating how ridiculous this is. We had a Delta codeshare KLM flight booked AMS-SFO (going on Delta to Istanbul, returning on KLM from Amsterdam). We had E+ seats booked and paid for on the Delta outbound flight, and wanted to get (and pay for) E+ seats on the return KLM flight. On klm.com, although we could see our record with our confirmation number, we couldn't book the E+ seats because we made the reservation through Delta. We called Delta. The first person very nicely said the same thing - sorry, I just realized this was a codeshare, and therefore you can't book the E+ seats until you get to the airport. Next day, tried again. This time, the agent said, well, I'll just switch your booking from Delta to KLM, waive the change fee, and oh by the way, the flight is cheaper, so I'll also issue a $40 credit. NOW you can go into the KLM website and book the E+ seats! It's crazy!!

I had some weird similar situation with booking through them a few years ago. I did learn that I ONLY book through Air France or KLM.
Oddly, since KLM and Air France are partners, you would think the prices would be the same on each website for the exact same flights. But they are NOT!
I was playing price roulette for about a month now on a trip from LAX to Athens, returning from Istanbul, going from the KLM site to the Air France site to the Lufthansa website, pricing different days, airline options, etc.
Lufthansa had the cheapest at first, but I held back because the price they charge to change a reservation is outlandish. Then KLM came down and beat Lufthansa's price. Almost went for it but decided to purchase at home after work. Needless to say, in those 4 hours, the price changed and went back up.
Eventually, when I found exactly what I wanted at the lowest price, I clicked on "buy".
KLM has a weird option of seat selection at the time. And I selected the seats, but guess I forgot to hit save, since once purchased, it didn't have the seats I selected on the confirmation. So I went back and did it again, this time with the save. And I finally got the confirmation of all of the seats . . . so excited!
