Kayak Hacker Fares

Does anyone have any information or knowledge about "Hacker Fares" offered on the Kayak website? About a year ago I thought I read an article about someone running into trouble using this fare. My research on the net hasn't brought up any negatives or problems with purchasing tickets when advertised as hacker fares.
Any information or experience is appreciated.

Generally it means the outward and return flights are on different airlines that may not be part of the same alliance.

Main danger is that if the outward flight is cancelled or changed some way that makes it unacceptable to you, you won't be able to claim a refund on the return flight

I've done it on low costs airlines before where the flight times were better on different airlines - generally it meant I could do a day trip by leaving early in the morning on one airline, returning late on another airlines

I book the equivalent of a "hacker" fare all the time - I think the name implies some devious move that it is not. Almost always now for US domestic flights, one-way is half of RT (unlike international where one-way tickets get really expensive), so depending on destination it sometimes makes sense to shop around for price and schedule.

Book the ticket with the airline directly.
