Japan Airlines

I am taking a trip in mid-winter from Los Angeles to Shanghai Pu Dong via Tokyo Narita Airport. Travel is on B747-400 and B767 out and B747-200 and B747-400 return. Can anyone give me any opinions on the inflight service in Economy Class for these sectors? Thank you in advance.

We flew from Tokyo Narita to Beijing on JAL in March 2002 and returned in April 2002. The JAL staff at Narita were extremely polite and all we encountered spoke excellent English. The flights were on a 747 and we were seated in economy but in the upper deck. We had a row of three seats for the two of us. All announcements were in Japanese, English, and Chinese; the flight attendants spoke excellent English. The flight featured two cameras (a straight down view and the cock-pit view). Personal video systems were available for each seat with four movies, short features, music, and video games (solitare and free cell). The meal service started with cocktails (complimentary) and snack mix, followed by an entree (beef or chicken), salads, sushi, and dessert. French wine was offered with the meals. The lavatories were quite nice, spotless, and had Shisedo products. The in-flight magazine was in Japanese and in English. Duty free items were available for purchase.

We redeemed AA miles (20,000) and paid $15 (US) in taxes for our JAL flights.

I would assume that service to Shanghai is similar to Beijing.

PLMK if you want more details; I still have my menus from both flights

Michael,
I've flown JAL frequently between West Coast U.S.A and Narita, all flights in economy. The service has always been polite and gracious - the flight attendants all seem to know at least three languages. JAL is known for keeping you well-fed on long flights. Green tea comes around at regular intervals, and snacks as well. The only airline I've liked better was Austrian Air - probably because they handed out chocolate bars with breakfast!
Seriously, I think you won't have any worries - economy class is always cramped, but JAL's service and safety record will make the trip better for you.
