How can I tell if United biz or first seats are flat style?
I am trying to book a Honolulu to Lima trip. Normally I fly continental, and on their seat maps it's quite clear if the seats are the bed type. I am using miles and was looking to see if UA had any cheaper flights, but on United's seat map all the first/biz seats look the same. According to seatguru, The UA777-200s should be lie-flats, but I'd feel better if I could find that info on Uniteds site.
I'm probably going to have to use 150,000 miles for this 20+ hour trip, so I'd really like to get good seats!

What is the route you're looking at?
United has several different 772 configurations. Out of Honolulu (e.g., to SFO or ORD) it will be the two-class domestic 777, which has standard domestic first class seats (definitely not flat), unless there is a last-minute substitution.
All international 777s (three classes of service) have flat first-class seats, but business-class seats will vary as these planes currently are undergoing updates to the new seats.
To see what the "new" flat international business seats look like on the seat map, do a search for SFO-KIX and look at the seat map for business. You'll see five rows of business and some are facing backwards.
To see what the very old, non-flat international business seats look like on the seat map, do a search for ORD-MUC. You'll see seven rows of business, all facing forward.
Note that during the conversion, which will probably be going on into next year, swaps of the international planes won't be out of the question--so you could book a flight on a 777 that is supposed to have the "new" seats and end up with old seats.
I would doubt that any United 777 on that route will be international, but I haven't really looked at all the options. I believe United is going to start operating the IAH-LIM route with a domestic 767, which has standard domestic first seats.

Lucy, if you go to seatexpert and put in your date and flight number, it will show you the plane being used. If it shows all front-facing biz seats, 2-3-2 config, it's probably the old 777. If econ class shows 3-3-3, then it's the new config.
