Free checked baggage for International flight?

We are traveling from Colorado to Italy on Delta and have a layover in Detroit. It says on our ticket that international flights get one free checked bag per person, so we get that free checked bag even from Denver to Detroit right? Or since that leg of the flight is not international do we have to pay? Dumb question....I know, but we've never been over seas :)
