Food ideas for domestic flights

Most big airports now have all sorts of food available, either prepackaged or made-to-order - so hotel stay the night before should not be a problem.

Whenever I travel I throw into my carryon some nutrition/energy bars and pick up a few pieces of fruit. Even if flight is short, there can be unplanned for time on tarmac, in terminal.

Energy bars, granola bars, crackers, fruits, veggies, etc. Think along the lines of "snackables". Things that don't require refrigeration, utensils, plates, etc. You can also pick up goodies at the local shops in the airport - french bread, etc.

I make up my own "goody" bags with nuts, raisins, a few chocolate chips. Also carry Kashi bars.

There is a Subway Sub shop located at the San Francisco airport near the American terminal. Personally, I thought it was better than a snack pack.

Hi Susan, one thing I always take with me is dried apricots in the resealable bag. Easy to pack (non liquid or gel, lol) and easy to eat and they seem to give me energy.

I carry noodle soups like cup-o-noodles. Way too high in sodium, but they are cheap, easy and light weight to pack and carry and you can always get hot water on a flight.

And if you're leaving at 8 a.m., that hot-water tip brings instant oatmeal into the realm of possibility.

This is a great site for travel sized goodies. For our 9 hr flight to Hawaii in August, I bought a bunch of the triangle-shaped cheese spreads, and a bunch of the little breadsticks you get in restaurant breadbaskets, plus some of the beefy jerky. Then bought a few bottles of wine on the plane and had our own little wine & cheese party.
And the laundry detergent in single serve boxes came in handy for doing our laundry in the condos.

We eat South Beach snack bars and dried fruit trail mix all the time, so my husband looks forward to whatever new travel snack surprise I might have. Of course, nuts are good for protein, so I buy 3 or 4 different snack crackers (start with Chex Mix) and mix them, then add mixed nuts. Put in snack size baggies so we each have our own. I use a fairly thick sided carry-on bag that has better protection from cushing stuff and fits under the seat in front of me. Another good idea is Rice Krispie treats and we love the Pepp. Farms Creme filled Pirouette Cookies (choc. hazelnut & french vanilla), although they do crumble easy so have to be put in a hard container. If planning to eat shortly after getting on the plane, sticks of cheese are good along with some crackers and dried meat. Bite-size candy bars always work for the sweet tooth, although not as nutritious. When you know you are going on a trip, pick up a few extra salad crackers in sm. pkgs when eating at a restaurant. I agree with Susan33, airline food is never worth the money! Also, for a quick drink, take Crystal Light flavor packets and dump into a bottle of water you can get on the plane.

Now the questions is can I get the food through security. Read somewhere that a person had a purchased sandwich and security took away the little packs of mayo, etc. It makes you wonder what is going on.
