Flying to New York: Newark? JFK?

We plan to fly to NYC at the end of October, returning after the marathon (we have a friend competing). Any comments on which airport to use? We'll be on USAir from Sacramento via Phoenix.

My opinion - if you're staying in lower Manhattan, Newark; any other part of NYC, including mid-town Manhattan, JFK.

Is La Guardia not an option? It's a lot smaller and easy to navigate. Best of all if they take the right approach you will get a killer view of the Manhattan skyline.

Phoenix is beyond LGA's perimeter rule that limits long-distance traffic.

Rally? I've flown there a few times from DFW, most recently last July.

Gardy, I do not doubt your expertise but I was curious so I looked it up and it seems DFW is barely within the perimeter rule. It's amazing how much I learn on Fodor's every day. Thanks for the fun fact.

DFW is within the perimeter (1500mi). Austin is about 25mi too far. The only exception the 1500mi limit is Denver.

J62, no wonder all of the non-stop flights from Austin to NY are to either EWR or JFK. The reason I use LGA is that I have a friend in Queens and she prefers to pick me up at LGA.

AA used to have a direct flight LGA to AUS that made a quick stop at Houston. That was a handy flight back when I was doing frequent trips back to Barton Creek area

After the recent accident I think I'd rather avoid LGA in any event! So...are there any major differences between Newark and JFK in terms of ease of navigating the terminals? Our one experience at JFK wasn't all that great. FYI, we'll be staying on the upper west side in NYC.

It may be that I am just accustomed to the place, but I use EWR all the time and find it quite easy - just hop the train into Penn Station to get to Manhattan.
IT is a shorter/cheaper taxi ride to LGA from most of Manhattan, but I still prefer EWR. Last visit I flew out of LGA and was reminded that it is an old facility in dire need of refurbishing. The clubs are pre-security which is a big negative.

I have taken NJ Transit to EWR and E Train to JFK a few times from various points in Manhattan as a visitor. No preference from me, but the hardest part of the EWR experience is finding the right NJ Transit platform and train at NY Penn. It may be second nature to NJ commuters, but not so much for a visitor. Maybe things have improved, but I doubt it.

My priority, assuming the price and time are right, would be a nonstop to and from Sacramento. Otherwise, It really doesn't matter. Newark is a shorter drive than JFK to the upper west side. Both airports are served by the train, and the travel time by rail is probably about the same.

Neither USAir nor AA offers non-stop flights, and those airlines are where our miles are parked.

EWR to west side Penn Station is easy by taking the train from NJ.
