Be careful. You need to look at the total cost of travel, not just the air fare. In addition to restrictions which may deem that ticket to be sold in Israel only (and possibly only to Israeli nationals), there are a bunch of factors which may increase the overall price including:

. exchange rates and credit card fees for dealing with an Israeli agency
. increased overall time of travel. I checked random dates and the return flight necessitates an overnight in Moscow.
. any extended layovers in Moscow which may result in a hotel stay (not all airports are open 24 hours) and other costs
. Russia visa costs if the usual transit visa is insufficient

Turkish Air is showing at least one fare of $926 in September (11-25 Sept, randomly selected) with reasonable connecting times. And El Al has nonstop flights of as low as $1288.

In addition to Delta, El Al flies direct from JFK and EWR, and United flies direct from EWR. Without knowing how long the planned stay is I see NoFlyZone's $926 on Turkish for multiple 1-2 week stays and United out of EWR is matching El AL's $1288 for a non-stop flight on multiple days as well.

Although it might be cheaper, I can't imagine why anyone would prefer to travel to Moscow just to get to Israel to save a couple of hundred dollars.

At least Istanbul is sort of on the way (or at least not so far out of the way). But I'd choose a nonstop every time. There are options from both JFK and EWR.

NoFlyZone is correct in that you should look at the entire cost of travel expenses. Sometimes picking the cheapest flight involves other expenses, so just make sure that is part of the process!
