Flight hotel pkg., then not use hotel

Hello,
I have heard of people booking a flight hotel package to get a cheaper flight, then not using the hotel or booking a different hotel.
Anyone ever hear of doing this?
My other question is, if you do this, how do you tell how much of your cost is for the flight and how much is for the hotel? When I go to a booking website and book a package, it just gives the package price and it's not broken down into the 2 prices.
Can you get a better deal doing this? How can I tell what the 2 prices are, so I know if the flight is cheaper than booking just the flight?

You don't have to know the unbundled prices if you're not using the hotel. For the purposes of comparison, the package is either less costly than the bare flight or it's not. I have seen significant discounts on the flight portion this way -- particularly on Asian trips. But if you're planning to get a hotel room anyway, why not choose one within the package that you can live with and get the full value of what you're paying?

You have to check the price for flights on your own, before comparing it to the cost of a package.

Sounds like you are asking about buying just the flight part of a package - the answer is no, you cannot do that. It's a package, and you cannot buy just one part or the other. It's like ordering a prix fixe menu - you can certainly not eat one of the courses but you will still pay the prix fixe price.

If you find a package with a total price below what you would pay for airfare alone you can buy the package and just stay at another hotel at your own expense, but those deals are few and far between.

purrcy: Sure, you can book an air/hotel package and not use the hotel. You are free to stay anywhere you want. But Seamus is right, you'd still have to pay for the full price of the package.
