Domestic US Carry On Luggage questions

It's been a long time since I tried to get away without checking a suitcase. BUT, I will be traveling for a 4 day weekend to Boston and would like to get away with it. So, here are a couple of questions:

1) Carry On Liquids - get a quart size Ziploc bag and I can put 3 3 oz. bottles of makeup, moisturizer or eye make up remover? Are powder blush and powder eye makeup OK? How does eye liner and mascara count?
2) I will have a roller that measures 45 linear inches (Delta says this is OK). Can I bring a large tote bag in addition to my purse? What about my raincoat - can I carry that on? Can I just stick my umbrella in the raincoat pocket or is that counted separately somehow?
3) I would like to put my dress in a store label dress bag (not really luggage) so I can lay it flat on the plane. Can I bring this or does it count toward carry on?
4) If I go shopping in Boston and have stuff in a shopping bag, is that item #3 in addition to my roller bag and tote?

This is very confusing, but I appreciate your help in advance. Thanks!

Here are some answers:

1) Yes, carry-on liquids/gels are limited to bottles/containers holding 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less. You can take as manny 3.4 oz or smaller bottles/containers that will fit in ONE 1-qt. ziplock bag. The limits apply ONLY to liquids and/or gels. Pack powders seperately as thay don't count. Go to the TSA website for complete details: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...ted-items.shtm

2) Your best bet is to go to your airlines website for their definition of what constitutes a "personal size" carry-on - usually it means a laptop case, woman's handbag or a reasonalble size small duffle. Without knowing how big yor "large tote bag" is makes it difficult to give you a yea or nay. Regardless of its size or what is said on this forum or other forums the final decision on whether or not an item will be allowed as carry-on will be left up the gate agent and/or flight attendant. If they say "no" telling them people on a travel forum told you it would be OK just won't have any bearing. You can "wear" your raincoat on the plane and take it off once you board. It does not count as a carry-on. Put your umbrella in one of the pockets or other carry-on since technically if you are carring it "openly" it counts as a carry-on item.

3) A dress in a "store dress bag" will count as a carry-on. There's no way around this.
4) Yes, anything in a shopping bag counts as a carry-on so if you have a roller bag & a tote you will not be allowed to take a "third" shopping bag.

You can have only 2 "bags" boarding the plane. So for example when I travel I have my rollaboard, my purse and my computer bag. To get through security and on the plane - I make sure my purse fits in either my rollaboard or my computer bag so I can consolidate down at security and embarking. Once I am in the terminal I can pull it out or once on the plane and have my purse separately.

Good advice from RoamsAround.
Think of it this way - anything that you take with you on board is a carry on, whether it is a suitcase, duffel bag, backpack or dress bag.
Since airlines have begun charging for checked bags more people are trying to squeeze by with just carry on, resulting in less space available in overhead bins. Enforcement of the rules regarding what is allowable varies and sometimes depends on the mood of the gate agent. Being among the first to board helps increase your chances of finding overhead space.

Your second carry on has to fit under the seat in front of you. I don't where you were planning to lay your dress, but it's not going to be in the overhead.

1. Mascara is a liquid. Eye liner might be. If it's a powder, it's not a liquid.
2. NO, it's a purse or a personal bag not both
3. If it's in your hands it's a carry on. This is item what.. FOUR???
4. No there is no "special expemption for shopping bags" and at this point you are up to FIVE items.

(For those of you saying "how did you get to five?" 1. 45" suitcase 2. Large Tote Bag 3. Purse 4. Dress bag 5. Boston shopping bag)

Honestly, if you need this much for four day trip you probably aren't a good canidate for carry on. Delta is getting better about checking and has started charging at the gate for folks trying to play "avoid the fees" like this. you have five items. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but four or five items for a four day weekend?

And don't focus on 3 oz bottles. You most likely don't need 3 oz of any single product for just 4 days. So you willbe taking lots of small bottles/jars/vials. Moisturizer, conditioner, body butter/cream, toothpaste, mouthwash, mascara, nail enamel/remover, lip gloss, etc, etc -- but each one will be 1 or 2 oz or less.

Your 100ml ziplok bag can hold as many items as you can stuff in -- as long as no single bottle is more than 3 oz.

(In my packing class I do a demo w/ 28 items in the baggie --no one needs than many, but it just shows what's possible)

Thanks for the recommendations. The toiletries will not be a problem, but packing all the gear in a carryon bag will be. I am going to a 4 day event (DD college graduation), where I will have casual daywear and dressy evening attire. It is necessary that I figure out how to do this, as I promised DD I will bring home a full suitcase for her on my return flight.

DD has advised me to "roll" my items, rather than fold up. I will be basing my wardrobe on 1 color (brown), only bringing one pair of shoes (that I will be wearing). Planning to wear my travel attire 2 days in a row, bring another casual outfit (to wear 2 days), and 2 dresses for dinner. I will call the hotel to ensure they have an iron I can borrow, as there just isn't any room for my travel iron. Will be putting my quart ziplock and reading book in a tote bag, that my purse will fit in if absolutely necessary (I am flying Delta).

Any suggestions on how to pack the dresses so they won't wrinkle so badly without a dress bag? thanks!

Put each dress in a drycleaning bag. Put the dresses in the bag in your suitcase as the VERY last thing so they are on top and not crushed by everything else.

And by the way, it's only carryon if YOU can lift in into the overhead. If you have to enlist the crew, your fellow passengers etc... it's checked luggage.

I do travel carryon, but if the bag gets too heavy for me to "hoist overhead" it gets checked. The Flight Attendants aren't required to help you and your fellow passengers have gotten tired of it and a lot of them just won't anymore (I quit after one elderly woman tried to make me lift a suitcase that must have weighed 60 pounds. No idea what she had in that thing, but...it's not worth having back problems over!)

I would never travel with only the shoes on my feet. I think a second pair of shoes is more important than any other clothing item. I couldn't stand wearing the same pair for days in a row (or heaven forbid they get wet or damaged or give you a blister).

can i ask why you won't check luggage? If I were you I;d check a bag and pay the $40 or whatever to take your daughter's stuff home.
