Connection Time from the US to CPT from JNB?

On our forthcoming trip to South Africa, we are flying to Johannesburg from Washington Dulles and then connecting to Capetown. I assume we go through immigration and customs at JNB and then recheck our bags to CPT. We are flying business class so we will be first off the aircraft. There is 1 hour 50 minutes between flights. Is this enough time?

Also, what is the procedure on our return from Port Elizabeth where we will again connect through JNB?

Yes, MCT is 90 min. You'll go through immigration and customs, then there's a bag re-check before you go out into the world and make your way to the CPT departure gate.

Note that while JNB is all one building, sometimes there will still be references to the "domestic" terminal, which used to be separate but isn't anymore.

Coming back, your bags will be checked through to IAD so you just need to go through an emigration (passport) check and off you go.

But, anticipate a long walk between gate exit and security entrance for each connection. You are unlikely to have time to shop or otherwise spend time in the unsecured areas.

It is probable that you will have to take a bus to and from the domestic leg of each trip, and should adjust your hand luggage accordingly, as the buses are no more comfortable or less crowded here than at any other airport.

Craig, this is a longshot but by any chance are you flying on Aug 25? If so then I will see you on board.

You may be first off the aircraft, but that won't matter much if you arrive at a bus gate, which happens often at JNB. IIRC, the flight from Dulles arrives in the very late afternoon. So, even if there are some delays in flights, immigration, or baggage delivery, you should be ok. (Last SA flight to Cape Town is 9pm.)
