On my return flight i want to end my trip in the layover city and forfeit the last leg of the flight, is it possible to check in my luggage only for part of the return flight? Does it vary by airline or there is a general rule?
to give an example: san diego to maui via LAX; return Maui to San Diego via SFO. I will have to check in my luggage in Maui (due to size) but i want to end my trip in SFO.
is that possible?
Thanks a lot!

I doubt it. Can you mail home some of your stuff, and carry on the rest?
You can do it if the connection is a reasonable one. For example, 90 minutes or more. Tell the agent you need to drop off some stuff to a friend or family at SFO.
But if the connection is like 45 minutes, then that "excuse" won't be reasonable. The agent may not notice it, but if he/she notices it, then it might be hard to explain yourself.
Not always. I managed to get Delta to do this once when I was picking up a car in Atlanta. I finally told them, two options (1) you only check this to Alanta or (b) it goes round and round and round in Nashville until you deal with it. LOL! (I was driving to Nashville so I didn't really care)
But this is actually part of the "hidden city" ticketing and by doing this you do flag yourself. THey can charge you for the change when you don't get on that last plane.I have never had it happen, but I only did the luggage check the one time....
