Can I buy a 1 way ticket to the UK with a >1year VISA

I have a VISA valid from 15 Jan 2013 til 31 Jan 2014 which is longer than 1 year. I therefore cannot book a return flight for the full duration of my VISA.

I am traveling as a dependent on a Tier 4 student VISA. I am an unmarried partner of my girlfriend who is a South African studying at Cambridge University.

I have every intention of coming back to SA but don't want to be committed to a return flight for in case my VISA gets extended.
