Business Class tickets to Lima are (relatively) cheap!

Just booked our flights to Lima in November. I was surprised to see that flights from Seattle to Lima (via Houston) were just $1500 in business class, and just over $1000 for economy. Is there usually so little difference in price between coach and business in flights to South America?

(This is our first trip to South America - we are usually booking flights to Asia or Europe, where the price differences are much larger.)

Although I used FF miles, 4 years ago Boston-Buenos Aires was only slightly more business than coach.

We just booked a trip to Lima from Chicago this past week (for May) and found the same thing.

Alas! No Bangkok in November. We are having Bangkok withdrawal, but will have to postpone until next year. I think our plan for November, 2015 will be Hong Kong and Bangkok. We have our Peru trip all booked, both flights and land arrangements.

Thanks Kathie. I'll be hoping for similar fares for a possible trip next year.

I've always wanted to visit Machu Picchu, so this is the year. We are splurging on this trip, so it was nice to see the low Bus Class airfares. We are taking the Orient-Express Train (The Hiram Bingham) and will spend two nights at the Sanctuary Lodge right at the ruins. Can't wait!

Smeagol, I'm sure you will love Sri Lanka!

Femi, are you thinking Peru or somewhere else in South America.

Carol, I'm sure we will enjoy this trip.

Thanks everyone, for the good wishes.

Just FYI, American Airlines is offering RT business class fares using their new DFW-HKG service (using their 773 with the new business class suites) for under $3000 from numerous cities.

Yes, Kuranosuke, the pricing does seem strange. The $1000 was for the cheapest economy fare, if we would have asked for an upgradeable fare, it might have been as much or more than buying the business class ticket. I haven't seen this on other routes (though I haven't checked lately). Fifteen years ago I was going to hike the Inca trail, now I'm going luxury.

Gardyloo, that's a pretty good price.

When I was buying last week, there also wasn't too much difference between W fares and discounted business fares...and there weren't any confirmable upgrades for our dates anyway (and I don't feel like playing the wait-list game). So I just bought the business tickets and saved the GPUs for something later in the year.

Your trip sounds terrific, Kathie! We are going to hike the Inca trail. It will be different than our normal mode of travel (I haven't camped in about 25 years ), but we're looking forward to it.

I'm not sure yet where I'll end up next year, most likely somewhere in Latin America. I'll be sticking closer to home because of my smaller budget. The increase in miles required for FF tix doesn't help either.

I didn't get to see you last post, kuranosuke, but I am sure it was not offensive.

Femi, I'm also not happy with United as they raised the ff miles for tickets on non-UA flights and cancelled flights from Seattle to Narita and from Narita to Bangkok. Boooo!

Did you hike the Inca trail?

We are spending two nights at the ruins.
