Best time to buy your tickets

I'm looking into the pricing of flights this July from NY to Seattle. Do the prices of the flights get cheaper as is gets closer to the fly dates or more expensive? There will be 7 people in our group. I don't want to buy too soon and pay too much, but also don't want to take a chance I don't get anything. We are flying to Seattle to connect with a cruise to Alaska. Delta seemed to have the best prices, but the times weren't that great.
