Dd and SIL are traveling back from Columbus Ohio to New Zealand departing CMH on Delta on Sunday 1st Feb. They fly to LAX and then get a flight to NZ at 7.30pm. DD is getting in a bit of a panic about luggage as you are allowed two free checked in bags on the Air NZ leg, but it appears you have to pay
$ 15.00 for the first bag, and $ 25.00 for the 2nd bag on Delta to get to LAX.
I have just read on the Delta website that if you are traveling outside the US you get two checked bags for free. DD has rung Delta and was told she would have to pay even though it is the first leg of an international flight.
Just wondering if any knows for sure whether they are in fact allowed free checked in baggage.

If the international segments were on Delta then the bags would definitely be free.
If the international segments are on a different ticket than the domestic segments then the bags would definitely not be free.
If all flights are on the same ticket then you may be able to convince Delta that the least restrictive rules should apply, and thus the bags go free. In this case, keep calling back until you get the answer you want.
It may be a bit complicated. It may depend on when they purchased their tickets. It may also depend on whether they purchased their tickets as one ticket or separate domestic and international tickets. I would have her print out and take to the airport a copy of the Delta website http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/baggage_allowance/excess_baggage/index.jsp The website descriptions distinguish only domestic and international travel and don't exactly describe their situation but perhaps they use it to their advantage. Air NZ does not appear to be a Skymiles partner with Delta so don't know about the relationship for checked bags or even whether they will be able to check bags through between the two airlines. They should certainly show both tickets at check in in CMH and ask if bags can be checked through to their final destination and as an international trip then whether the fees apply. A smile and a pleasant request at the desk will go a long way. In the end the domestic fee for two bags may be irritating but probably not getting all worked up over.
Is this all the way on Delta to NZ, and bought as one ticket? Should be international rules.
No they are separate tickets so the domestic rules will apply I guess.
