In my experience, no. It might depend on who you mean by "they" though.
For *most* airlines, you should be able to gate-check strollers with no additional charges. However, European discount airlines like easyjet and Ryanair do charge extra for strollers.
BTW, depending on the airports, you may NOT be able to retrieve the buggy when you de-plane. (ie You may have to pick it up at the luggage carrousel).
Actually Easyjet and Ryanair don't charge for strollers that are taken to the gate. I've used both recenty for flights with my 1 year old and they are fine

No doubt it's something Ryanair will 'fix' if they realise they can make money out of it.
Quote from Ryanair:
"There is no checked or cabin baggage allowance for infants. However, one fully collapsible pushchair per child is carried free of charge and does not need to be prebooked. If using online check-in, the pushchair should be taken to the Bag Drop desk to be tagged before going through security."
Cathy9250: Welcome to Fodors. Curious how you even located this more then three year old thread to post this??
Yeah, this 3-yr old thread may no longer have valid info, as rules are/have changed. Always best to check on your airlines website for current guidelines. Can find an overview of several airline policies (2011) here >>>
