BA Seat Selection

if I book my flight using AA miles but on a BA flight on the AA site, how do I choose my seats as AA will not allow me to see the seat plan or choose my seats if it is a BA flight?

You may be able to access your flights on the BA site using the ticket number. If not, call AA and ask for the "record locator" for the BA flights. They have no problem giving it to you. Then use it on the BA flight to pull up the flight(s).

Unless you have AA Platinum/Oneworld Sapphire frequent flyer status or higher, you can't unless you're willing to pay for advance seat selection. This is one of several BA practices that many flyers don't like, along with their excessive fees on award bookings.

Get your record locator as described above and go online to BA's website, and choose "manage my booking." If you want to pay for seat selection, you'll be given that opportunity. Otherwise you can wait until 24h before your departure and pick seats during on-line check in (OLCI). In most cases you'll be able to get decent seats even then.

This was exactly the case on my recent flights - booked through AA but the leg between Edinburgh and Heathrow was a BA flight. I was able to choose my seats for the AA flights at the time I made my reservation, but had to wait until 24 hours before departure before I could choose my seats on the BA flight unless I wanted to pay to get a seat assignment.

At any rate, there were a good number of decent seats available to choose from when I checked in. I have never flown BA before and I was pleasantly surprised - the seats were quite roomy, compared to the standard economy seats I'm used to on UA and AA (plus it was very comfortable without having to recline the seat at all) and even on such a short flight they served a hot meal.

Also tried to book a seat for my husband on BA after using AA miles, and the BA website (I'm a BA miles club member) kept saying that I could book seats without paying extra 24 hrs in advance. At 24 hrs they still wouldn't let me book a seat without paying and we had to wait until we checked in at the airport to get a seat.

BA did let me book my seat a week in advance using AA miles because I have AA Gold.

I recently flew BA using an AA frequent flyer award. I called BA to ask what is my reservation # with BA. They gave it to me and I was able to go on ba.com and book a seat. When you go to ba.com look for "manage my booking." I had 2 flight segments on BA. I decided to pay for a seat on the first flight since it was an overnight flight and I wanted to be more comfortable. For the second flight I waited and booked it for free when I checked in.

I also obtained my reservation number from BA, but was not allowed to book the seat free 24 hrs in advance as they had previously stated on their website and also by phone.
