Any compensation owed in this situation?

United cancelled (changed flight to next day) our (4 of us) flight from Roatan to Houston causing us to miss our flight from Houston to London. Everything totally booked between Houston and London for several days due to holiday. Had to buy whole new return going thru Atlanta, Newark, Belfast to get home. Nobody to discuss this with in Roatan and we must get back. Any suggestions?

Sorry...should have said transatlantic on BA, getting to Houston on Unites. Yes, never use different airlines.

Was this two tickets? That really limits what UA has to do and is a risk of an unprotected connection. Also, why did UA cancel? If it was weather there is very limited compensation.

The possibility of flight cancellations is an unfortunate part of travel, but something anyone can reasonably foresee. Doing whatever is necessary to ameliorate the possible damage is always prudent. You take a risk when using different airlines on an itinerary with connections, as you know. You increase your risk of monetary loss if you don't insure your trip against such eventualities.

Sorry for your trouble, but I think you and United are both off the hook, no compensation owed on either side - you don't owe them anything and they don't owe you anything. They contracted to get you to Houston, which they did. That's the end of their responsibility. BA contracted to get you to London, which they would have done if you hadn't missed your flight. That's the end of their responsibility.

Well UA may owe something, but probably only lodging/food for the extra night. It sounds like they didn't have a ticket on one "booking" from Roatan to London, but one ticket Roatan to Houston and one Huston to London. That's where the issue comes in. If it's two tickets and UA's change caused you to miss the BA flight then they have no liablity. If it was one ticket then they may have had a liablity, but... if you decided on your own to "buy a new ticket' you are probably out of luck.

When did you find out the cancellation? And what was the reason they give you?

no reason, just an email the day before flight saying the flight had changed dates and no other way to get from Roatan to Houston. No way to reschedule this weekend out of Houston due to full flights and 4 of us. Many phone conversations both from Roatan and London (secretary in office. Yes, never buy two separate tickets, but airlines should not move flights to another day.

One more hiccup...Newark flight overbooked. Almost did not get on it and no available other flight until Monday. This is a trip to remember.

Since you didin't end up flying Roatan-Houston on UA due to the change, UA at least owe you the value of that flight. More than that, they may give you some token miles, but don't expect much more. In cases like this, some travel insurance may be helpful if it covers schedule change and flight misconnection.

I would certainly ask for extra miles if you aren't able to get much out of them other than a refund of your flight costs. Some polite persistence might be rewarded. And double check the fine print in your travel insurance, including ay that might be provided with the credit card you used.

A cautionary tale for us all, to be sure. Hope the trip was worth the trauma.
