Any advice for flying on Spirit to Guatemala?

Hello,

Choices were scant this spring for reasonable flights from the Southeast to Guatemala, so we are braving Spirit this March with a group of 20 travelers. We fly from Myrtle Beach to Ft Lauderdale to Guatemala. We saved $300+ per person.

Other than paying for the Big Front Seat, which isn't an option for most of our travelers, what advice do you have for us? Is this going to be awful?

Arrive at the airport with plenty of time before the flight so Spirit doesn't sell your seat to somebody else.

I will send you an update after Jan. 22. Two SILs are coming from FLL. Just be aware of their baggage fees and policies.

Yeah, it's pretty awful but a relatively short flight, so I don't see any issues. Remember that it's cheaper to check bags than carry on. You pay to use the top bin on Spirit. And to get the cheapest prices, you have to pay for all bags BEFORE you check in online. Prices are double if you wait until you arrive at the airport.

Zedlanier,

Your $300 saving per person could quickly evaporate if you have to check your bags on Spirit. You will also have to pay for snacks on Spirit. Although reasonable compared to airport prices, I suggest you bring your own and save a few bucks.

Would be interested in hearing about your experience on Spirit. I find the employees to be nice and helpful but the seating comfort level on the airplane is not the best unless you purchase the limited "Big Front Seats" or have a small frame.

Also be patient if you encounter any delays with Spirit.. They run a lean operation that often leaves them without many options if you encounter any Spirit delays.

If your group is well informed and all goes well Spirit can turn out to be a real bargain.

My two SILs didn't have any negative to say about their flights on Spirit. Just to buy a bottle of water after clearing security, have your own food and snacks. They each checked a bag and had a small under the seat personal item.
