airlines recommendation from the USA to Hong Kong

We are leaving from the States to Hong Kong in early November. This is a first time to Asia for both of us. Can anyone recommend an airline that they have personally used for similar travel? When is the best time to start looking at purchasing tickets? What can we expect to pay for tickets for travel at that time of the year? Thank you so much for any information.....

My personal preference for flying from California to HKG is Cathay Pacific. Based in HKG, privately held (last time I looked), it always seems to come up the winner, is well run and I've never been sorry.

Cathay Pacific is not privately owned. It is currently owned approximately 42% by Swire, 30% by Air China, 25% in public shares, and 3% CITIC Pacific. And portions of the shares in those three companies are publicly traded as well.

Years ago, Cathay Pacific was a subsidiary of Swire, but Swire itself was and is publicly traded.

Yes, and...? I was wrong but who cares. The OP is looking for an airline. Any thoughts that matter?

We are leaving from the States to Hong Kong in early November.

From... Alaska? Arkansas? There are flights to HKG from many US airports; it might help to know where you're flying from.

Also, are you planning to travel in economy, premium economy, business class or first class?

Do you participate in any airline frequent flyer programs, have miles saved up or elite status? If so, which airline(s)?

MmePerdu - I agree with you about CX. Just want to set record straight.

Asian carriers are normally at he top for ratings and that includes Cathay. We have used ANA and Asiana though they stop first. Singapore is rated very high as well but of course it depends on where you are flying from and your price point. I would go with any of the above, especially if you are flying economy.

I prefer CX and like that they fly non-stop from ORD to HKG, which is a plus for me. I've experienced both J and F, and find the experience to be top notch. I'm not sure where you're from, but HKG routes from the US are continually added. I'll be doing AA's new DFW to HKG route.

Three major factors.

1. Fare & mileage concern.
2. Non-stop vs stopover. And schedule in general.
3. Comfort and service.

1 & 2 depends on where you fly from and date of travel. Don't underestimate 2. In many cases, it will override the other factors.

Others have commented about 3, though I'd argue that I'd prefer SQ over CX in all class of travel. And they fly once daily SFO-HKG.

Since Mirables has mentioned cost, I assume it's a factor. Singapore certainly has a reputation for excellent service but has always come in at a higher price than Cathay Pacific, in my experience, and why I inevitably choose CX.

J = business class, F = first class, SQ = Singapore Airlines.

(Y = economy.)

I would suggest you start looking at fares now, and when you see one you can live with, purchase! no guarantees, of course, but I suspect fares will be creeping up from now until your date of departure.
