A good travel agent or online booking expert (OBE) should be able to do about $1400-1500. A great one should be able to get down to $1200 to $1300.

Of course it depends on the departure city, but flights.com shows flights from JFK for under $1000 before taxes.

Find an inexpensive flight to Amsterdam then from Amsterdam book through Northwest. Even though, Northwest handles the ticket, I believe you fly on Kenya Air. I can't remember. Anyway, the flight from Amsterdam to Nairobi was $630.

That is a lot. You should be able to fly from London to Dar es Salam for $600 and it will only cost $400 to fly from the States to London. This way you get to see London too.
