Air Asia QZ8501, Malaysia Airlines MH370

It is always heart-breaking and sometimes puzzling to read about the possible crash and lost of lives in relationship to today's sophisticated and modern aircraft.

Although by far one of the safest forms of transportation, air travel is not without its fair share of risk and threats that have to be well managed. While I am sure weather will be a contributing factor in the case of Air Asia the major focus of an investigation will be the flight crew response in dealing with this threat.

From what we know so far the crew requested deviation around the weather but those request and deviation my have come to late.

The forces of mother nature cannot be underestimated when it comes to dealing with severe weather in the air or even on the ground. With the resources available to most airline flight crews it is somewhat of a mystery to me how an airplane can end up in such bad weather that is dangerous enough to possibly cause its demise.

Proper flight planning, on board radar systems and/or help from air traffic controllers should help to reduce the risk associated with flying around bad weather.

I hope for the best for Air Asia QZ850 and MH370 and for those who had love ones on board. However, the more time that passes without us knowing anything new the less likely that what we hope for will come true.

In time hopefully we will know the cause of these unfortunate accidents and will learn a lot from this information to make aviation even more safer than it is today.

Also and back to the subject it will be interesting to see what the cause of this accident was assuming they find the black boxes. I heard on the news that it seemed this aircraft took an incredibly steep climb climb before they lost contact. Let's see what the facts show.I am so sorry for the families and loved ones of those who died

Indeed. . He is full of that.

Anyway time to move forward. Take care and I look f/w to your TR's. We plan for a small trip in May, perhaps to DC again, then in Feb. 2016 we take an 11 day cruise out of Singapore (will go about a week early) and then cruise to Brunei, Cambodia, and two stops each in Thailand and VN.

JW,

That sounds exciting ... Which cruise line?

We have never done cruising in that part of the world .. so I'll look forward to hearing about your experience to entice us to do so...

It's on the Sapphire Princess and actually this will be the first time we have been on the same ship twice. We cruised here when she was fairly new in 2005 for an Alaskan cruise. She had a refit last yr. so should be in good shape.

We too have not traveled much to Asia so we have been trying to make up for that.

Stayed tuned and take care.

Larry.,

Just saw a report Air Asia QZ8501 flight crew did not pick up flight weather report ... which should have been the norm as it is here for airline flights.

If this turns out to be the case then this is a major problem for Air Asia to address with all of it's flight crew members.

Safety is definitely jeopardized when a flight crew through a fault of their own or the company does not have all the information and resources necessary to operate a flight safely.

My grandson recently graduated from flight school and has a job as an instructor for another flight school that trains pilots for several Asian airlines. He has his license but he needs to accumulate 1500 flight hours in order to apply for a job with a US airline. The students he is training will be flying in the cockpit of an airline immediately upon graduation. They need no further experience beyond the several hundred hours accumulated in flight school!

Unfortunately, the requirements and standards for hiring pilots in many other countries are not as strict as for example in US, UK and Europe.

These countries and their aviation authorities definitely deserve "kudos" for making air travel in their countries one of the safest forms of public transportation.
