A nice surprise benefit of Star Alliance Gold
I've been Star Alliance Gold for many years. The greatest benefit I've experienced on partner airlines is a larger free baggage allowance and early boarding. The lounges available have been mostly underwhelming.
We flew from Lima to Cusco and Cusco to Lima on Avianca. From Lima to Cusco, we presented our Gold Cards for the agent to make sure our MP numbers were in the computer. On the way back, we again took out our cards. I asked about upgrading to First on this domestic flight, having sometimes been able to do so for about US$20. The agent spent a time on her computer and finally said, yes, I can upgrade you, but I can't get you a first class meal. I said that was fine - how much? She tapped the Gold card and she said "free."
Nice benefit.
