My DH and I self-drove through Zambia in October 2011 and felt perfectly safe other than when we were driving on the highways, which were a nightmare of grossly overloaded, poorly maintained trucks that were too wide for the road and therefore infringed on our lane. There were remnants of trucks and buses in the ditches all along the highway, but particularly on sharp corners and at the bottom of hills. They were a sad and sobering sight, because we knew that many would have involved fatalities. We did not feel safe driving in Zambia and would not likely do it again.
If you are flying from camp to camp, no worries - the scenery, game viewing and guides were amazing! I would highly recommend Old Mondoro in LZNP and Kaingo Camp in SLNP - spend a night in Kaingo's treehouse - one of our most memorable nights in Africa!
I cannot speak to Zimbabwe - we have not been there in years. CR

My Info is propably outdated, but I was in Zimbabwe doing selfdrive in 2007 and we didn't have any problems. And the situation back then was far worse than now. Still people were friendly and easygoing

We were in Zimbabwe last fall. All of our travel was planned for us -- tourism is the one of the few dependable large-scale job providing industries in the country. Whether we were being taken somewhere in a bus or being driven or flown between locations, the vehicles were clean, safe and comfortable, and the people involved were friendly, very professional and spoke freely about life. We felt totally safe, and found even the long drive from Vic Falls to Hwange was comfortable, and culturally informative.

Was just in Zambia again. A-OK. Safety not an issue at all but I did not self drive on the highways. Just drove, as a passenger, around Lusaka.
My own concerns on Zim are avoiding elections, the date of which seems to be fluid and up in the air. During non-election time, I'd go to Zim without a second thought.

Thank you guys for your comments it help us improve our services in Zimbabwe as tour operators in Southern Africa and what you are doing is actually mapping Zimbabwe on the picture again, it is quite true that on safety Zimbabwe is highly recommended and the most of the Visitors say Zimbabwe is far much safer than South Africa, apart from the hungry vendors who comes to you like bees on a flower
