Zambia - Livingstone Airport - In Transit SA->Botswana and Back!

We are flying Johannesburg to Livingstone and then connecting to a Wilderness Safari flight to Botswana.

On the return we are doing the reverse.

We really don't need to enter Zambia and certainly don't want to pay $50 USD per person for visas. However, we do need to pickup our backs from JNB to get them to the charter and on return need to do the same to check them in to get them to JNB.

I have never done this before at Livingstone Airport. Any ideas or experience on this one?

It looks like Zambia doesn't allow sterile transit; you'll need a transit visa, same price as the regular. However they offer a "day tripper" visa for US$20; that might work for you. http://www.zambiaembassy.org/vaf.pdf

LVI is a pretty dinky airport.

Yes, LVI is a small airport.

I did a one-way trip through Livingstone in Jan 08 because the Maun flight was full for that day. I didn't pay for the transit visa -

I was returning from the Bots safari.

HariS,

What was the procedure? Did you have bags from the Botswana flight and were able to check them in for your connecting flight?

Always.

The Zambia websites are very confusing but... I have found other references to not needing any visa if connecting to another flight and yes, there is also the day tripper visa that used to be $10 USD and apparently is now $20 USD.

Always,

Yes - I had my duffel bag, that had to be checked in. From memory, it was a BA flight - LVI to JNB.

Again from memory, I just told the immigration guy that I was coming in from Botswana on the Moremi Air charter flight and that I had to take the BA flight to JNB. No hassles, at all ........ infact, there was a family of 4 that also came on the same flight - as they weren't able to connect to JNB via Maun that day.

HariS,

Thank you. I am doing the same thing but in both directions. With three of us it would sure be a pain - and a bunch of money - if we had to get visas for our connection.

Always
