You're missing out if you just go for Gorillas

Just got back from 12 days in Rwanda and I'll post a full trip report later, but if anyone is planning a trip to Rwanda, please see it all! Akagera had great game and no people. The country is beautiful and so are the people. Nyungwe is stunning with lots of primates! Lake Kivu is beautiful. Go to Amahoro Island and have a beer. I was shocked when we did our gorilla treks that everyone I met said, "I didn't know there was anything else to see in Rwanda! And, if you're from California, it comes complete with earthquakes (that I could have done without)!

Oooh would love to hear more - a friend is off to Rwanda later this month and, apart from the gorilla treks, I don't think they have prebooked anything.

Thanks, any more detail on Akagera? My visit to Rwanda was solely to see the gorillas, but I did research Akagera, and it did not seem game rich (this was in August 2003). But, I do intend to go back, and I'm now planning a trip to DRC and Burundi that will require me to transit in KGL, so I may spend some time in Rwanda. But that trip is not until 2009 or 10, so I have time.

Thanks, Michael

I've been waiting for years for more info on Akagera. Maybe I'll incorporate it into an Aug 2009 visit.

Please give us the whole scoop when you are able.

And welcome home.

I came to my computer and I could feel the power of a great Rwanda thread starting. I signed in and here it is

yes there is much more to Rwanda than the gorillas. Across the Land of a Thousand Hills has a magic and beauty that Kenya and Tanzania can only dream of touching.

And I am quite glad I missed the earthquakes

Quickly on Akagera: We saw giraffe (good giraffe), topi, oribe, klipspringer, eland, zebra (loads), impala, hippo, croc (biggest I've ever seen), buffalo, baboons, vervet monkeys and a black momba. There was fresh elephant dung, but we did not encounter an elephant. Our guide had recently seen a leopard. We encounterd one car going the oppostie direction. The lodge sits at Lake Ihema and is beautiful. Great birds too. I didn't have a field guide, so cannot list them.

Nyungwe: Saw chimps, colobus monkey, blue monkey, mona monkey, L'oests (sp?) monkey. Orchids were not in bloom yet, but what an absolute beautiful place.

I would also definitely recommend Hotel Bethanie in Kibuye or a stay in Gisenyi.

Thanks and I'll be interested in your specific itinerary and how many days you stayed in each place.
