Your thoughts on our itinerary

Jump to last reply

Hello everyone, this is my first post at Fodors.com, but I've been planning a trip to Africa over the last couple of weeks.

We are planning a safari in Tanzania and gorilla trek in Rwanda in 2012. Possibly May -- is this too early? Or June. May is better timing for us but I realize it might rain on us. Good idea? Any other thoughts on this itinerary? Thanks!

Day 1: Arrive Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Overnight in Dar es Salaam.
Day 2: Fly Dar es Salaam to Kigali, Rwanda. Overnight near Volcanoes National Park (hotel?).
Day 3: Gorilla Trek. Overnight same hotel.
Day 4: Fly Kigali to Kilimanjaro. Get picked up at airport to start Safari. Overnight Ilboru Safari Lodge in Arusha.
Day 5: Arusha National Park, mixed hiking and game drive. Overnight Ilboru Safari Lodge.
Day 6: Drive to Tarangire National Park. Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge.
Day 7: Full day game drive Tarangire National Park. Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge.
Day 8: Drive to Serengeti. Overnight Serengeti Wilderness Camp.
Day 9: Serengeti game drive. Overnight Serengeti Wilderness Camp.
Day 10: Serengeti game drive. Overnight Serengeti Wilderness Camp.
Day 11: Morning game drive Serengeti and drive to Ngorongoro Crater; enroute, visit Oldupai Gorge.
Day 12: Ngorongoro game drive. Afternoon, drive to Lake Eyasi. Overnight Tindiga Tented Camp.
Day 13: Visit Hadzapi Bushmen and Datoga Tribe. Drive to Arusha. Overnight Ilboru Safari Lodge in Arusha.
Day 14: Bus/fly to Dar es Salaam and take ferry to Zanzibar. (Can we do this all in one day, or should we plan to spend the night in Dar es Salaam? Or maybe we can fly from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar?)
Day 15: Overnight Zanzibar (don't know where yet - suggestions?)
Day 16: Overnight Zanzibar.
Day 17: Overnight Zanzibar.
Day 18: Ferry to Dar es Salaam. Overnight in DAR.
Day 19: Fly home.
