Yellow Fever and Custom Bonds

I've been reading info from the Kenya & Tanzania High Commission & they say Yellow fever vaccinations arent mandatory - can you easily get in without them?

And: A custom's bond may be demanded from those bringing in video/filming equipment, radios, tape recorders and musical instruments to ensure the goods are re-exported.
Has anyone had to pay a bond?

Yellow Fever certicates ARE mandatory. Beginning on January 21, 2008, Kilimanjaro Airport reinstated health surveillance desks to enforce the Yellow Fever certificate requirement.

It appears that the Tanzanian government was phasing in the certificate requirement and was being somewhat lenient. But the certificates are required for all passengers entering Tanzania.

Tanzania itself is an infected area, and Yellow Fever is no joke. So you should get the vaccination regardless. It needs to be in the body 10 days before it is 100% effective and is good for 10 years.

Arriving from a Western country, i.e., US, Canada, UK and other western European countries direct to Kenya and/or Tanzania, Yellow Fever inoculation is NOT required.

However, if you have visited (even only landing) in Kenya prior going onto Tanzania, Yellow Fever inoculation IS required for entry. This requirement was reinstated in mid-January 2008.

If you are visiting Tanzania (without touching Kenya), but then plan to visit Zanzibar Island, Yellow Fever inoculation IS required for entry to the island.

Be sure, once you're received this inoculation you obtain a Yellow Card, verifying said inoc; it will have to be presented with your passport on arrival. If you don't have proof, staff is on duty in Tanzania to give you a jab. I don't believe you'll want this done.

Customs Bond - Unless you work for National Geo and/or are a professional photog with cases and cases of equipment, as a tourist with your camera, few lenses and maybe a storage device - NO bond required.

Epi Pens - No problem, but suggest you have doctor's note, just to be on the safe side.

Yellow Fever certicates ARE mandatory. Beginning on January 21, 2008, Kilimanjaro Airport reinstated health surveillance desks to enforce the Yellow Fever certificate requirement.

We flew into Kilimanjaro airport on the KLM flight from AMS March 21, 2008 and there was no 'health surveillance desk' checking for this. We bring the yellow international health cards but have never been checked in half a dozen trips to Kenya and Tanzania.

And letters dont help, my friend travelling locally with EP, had dramas, so she told them to throw it out, she was told she couldnt do that as she might need it, and the only way it could travel was in checked in luggage. Would they open the door and let her get it if she needed it? hehehe

If traveling from OZ, suggest you ascertain what you need to re-enter OZ at conclusion of safari.

On re-entering Australia on our return from Kenya in '06 we were asked if we had Yellow Fever certificates (we did) so there wasn't a problem. I'm not sure if it was mandatory but the customs guy seemed to be happy that we could present our yellow card. But, before leaving we had lots of conflicting info as to 'yes' or 'no' and decided to go for it anyway and it was needed last year for our trip to South America so we felt we had got our money's worth, so to speak!
