We recently stayed at the Windhoek Country Lodge whilst on business in Namibia. It is a 4 star hotel just outside Windhoek but with a regular bus service into town. <BR><BR>I would recommend it any day. See http://www.legacyhotels.co.za/asp/ho....asp?hotelid=7 for more info.<BR><BR>Do yourself a favour and have supper at Joe's Beer House, it is quite an experience. I would recommend that you make reservations early as it is very popular.

In October, 2000, my husband and I stayed at two facilities, the Hotel Furstenhof and the Hotel-Pension Handke, which is right down the street from the Furstenhof (but, if you are driving, must be approached the "back way"
. Both were very good, but very different. The Furstenhof is a conventional hotel with all the conveniences of a good quality establishment and an excellent restaurant (to which you can easily walk from the Handke). The Handke is owned and run by a second generation German immigrant couple and has about ten small cottages set under the trees of a spacious garden. The accommodations are modest, with no television, pool, fax machines, or Internet. Were I going again, I would choose the Handke because of the personal touch and the casualness. Three places that we can recommend for meals, other than the Furstenhof, are the Gathermann (downtown), the Homestead (very difficult to find, but worth the effort---you need a taxi, but have the driver communicate with the people at the Homestead before you set out about directions), and Joe's Beerhouse (seems to be a favorite among the locals). The best small European-style hotel in Windhoek is Heinitzburg Castel on Heinitzburgstrasse, about a 10 minute walk, or two minute taxi ride, from the city center. The hotel is perched on a cliff overlooking Windhoek -- the outdoor breakfast tables afford one of the city's best views.<BR><BR>I visited the Windhoek Country Club to play in the casino, but in my view, it was very similar to an Atlantic City or Las Vegas hotel, with NO sense of place or character. If you hadn't told me, I would never had realized I was in Windhoek, let alone Africa.<BR><BR>But I do agree with the above post -- Joe's Beer House is a fun place for a great steak dinner.
