For four or five weeks of travel...
Rwanda -> Burundi -> Western Tanzania -> Zambia -> Zimbabwe -> home
or
Rwanda -> Burundi -> Western Tanzania -> Malawi -> Mozambique -> home
Basically, are Zambia/Zimbabwe or Malawi/Mozambique more interesting? What are some of the cheapest airports to fly out of in the area?
Which is a better route?

I'd vote for Zambia/Zimbabwe for the wildlife, Victoria Falls, etc. In Africa, it's not a matter of using the cheapest airports; there's usually only one choice. You'll find that connections are difficult between eastern and southern Africa. You may go through Nairobi for Rwanda and Burundi and Johannesburg for Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Hi there
What are your interests? Are you more interested in aquatic life, scuba diving etc or do you prefer game viewing and more of a wildlife experience? The reason I am asking, is all the destinations you mentioned have some very unique "selling points" (for lack of a better word) - and it would ultimately depend on what you prefer. However, personally I do believe that Zambia and certain parts of Zimbabwe is very very special and I would gladly refer you to some destinations that we have travelled to.
Kind regards
