when to go

We are thinking about visiting Israel next year and want to go sometime other than the summer when it is so hot. We were thinking October might be a nice month or perhaps April. Is there a rainy season to avoid?
Do you know any particularly good but reasonable tours?

Both are good times. Would suggest you verify when in

October - the Jewish New Year and other holidays; this year '08 many are in October. Come Oct '09 they might be in Sept as holidays vary with the moon (the Jewish calendar).

April - both Easter and Passover often observed within weeks of one another or the same week.

Both of these periods have tourists visiting and many Israelis take holiday at the same places/resorts. Hotels might only accept minimum stays (5+/nights); higher prices.

If in the States, check
- Isram Travel (or Tours), located in NYC, 3rd Ave or
- Gate 1, located in Phila Pa suburb.
Both have websites that you can review for their offerings and prices.

These are the best times of the year climate-wise but try to avoid the busy festival periods if you can - especially in October when most stops. But remember the dates of Jewish festivals change each year.

September is also nice - also sometimes affected by festivals as is May.

Hope this helps

For 2009, Passover falls Apr 9-15 (actually starting the previous night). Succot falls Oct 3-10. Passover is a definite high season, hotels and flights are quite expensive. Jerusalem also gets quite mobbed during Succot.

Personally I like early spring. June is already quite hot, while Jerusalem gets quite cold and wet in winter.

April 2009: Two weeks after Passover is Independence Day, April 28-29. Unless you really want to take part in the festivities, best to avoid it. This is HIGH season for hotels. I vote for early May - the temperatures aren't that hot, the humidity is still pretty low, and the chance of rain is zip. The daylight hours are longer and there's still some green around from the winter rains (we hope).

Much of Israel is very easy to visit on your own. You can combine independent sightseeing in the cities with short tours to more inaccessible (without a car) venues.
