I am in the process to put together an itinerary for 5 weeks in South Africa (or neighbour countries). We will be going in feb/march 2014 and the only the thing we are certain of, is we want to see Cape Town.But I hope to include Kgalagadi National Park too.
We will fly in at Johannesburg and out of Cape Town. We have been to Africa before, been to most countries in Southern and Eastern Africa. Last year we did 5 weeks selfdrive in Namibia and Botswana, so we have some experience in driving around. On that trip we rented a 4x4 which was pretty useful, but I don´t know if we need that again? We really like wildlife and nature so that is our main interest, last year we really like to bushcamp, but I don´t know if that possible in South Africa. (I been to Kruger,
)
Any ideas on what to put in the itinerary?? Do we need a 4x4 or just for some parts of the trip? Any thoughts about crossing into other countries?
What to do with 5 weeks in South Africa(with 2 kids aged 5 and 9)?

Wow, five weeks! You'll have a great time.
We spent 9 or 10 days in Kgalagadi in 2008; it was awesome. We took a bakkie, so as to have room for all our food and water. You do need to take your own water -- the water there tastes really horrible. If you go to camps other than Twee Rivieren, you'll need to take your own food too.
For driving on South African roads in general, you certainly don't need a 4x4. An ordinary sedan is fine.
If you want some ocean time, consider Tsitsikama National Park near Plettenberg Bay, or the town of St. Lucia in Natal, with nearby Cape Vidal. That's also close to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, which has lots of rhinos as well as lions and leopards and so forth.
I assume you've looked at the sanparks website. It has great information about all the national parks.
