what kind of plug adapters to use in south africa

I seem to get conflicting reports. Some online sites say you need a plug with 3 round prongs, but my guidebook says you can also use a European type plug. Any comments would be appreciated.

I got the wrong info and ended up buying an adapter when I got to South Africa. Fortunately I was in Cape Town and they were readily available.

I took 3 pictues of the local wall plugs and local plug-in devices. If you email me, I'll send you the 3 photos and you can see for yourself.

deesh801,

The electricity supply in South Africa is 220-250 volts, 50 Hz.

To see, in pictorial form, what plugs we use in SA please go to:
www.ILoveCapeTown.com/saplugs/plugs.htm

The above should set you on the right track for my country however I am unsure as to what you need to do for Botswana.

Hope this helps.

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa

Some handy sites. There goes my plan to travel the world photographing outlets.

If it weren't for digital cameras and the need to recharge the battery, I wouldn't have to bookmark or care about all this.

South Africa use the old U.K. pre 1980 3 prong round 5 amp plugs (the euro 2 pin plug is too narrow so will not work). It has quite a large top earth prong and 2 smaller prongs.
They are available at Heathrow and most other airports.

Instead of topping an 8 yo thread about plug adapters - couldn't you just print out the important bits or e-mail it to yourself.
