What is the allure of Dubai?

Cultural differences aside, is Dubai like any other ocean resort? How are Americans received there and what kind of entertainment or nightlife may one expect? Thanks for any insight.

SpongeBob -

As an American expat who has lived in Saudi Arabia and is currently living in Kuwait (until being evacuated recently for obvious reasons), Dubai's allure for me is that it's not Kuwait or Saudi Arabia!

It's a good weekend escape for those of us living in more restricted areas. It's very Westernized with good restaurants, uncensored movies, a lively night scene and plentiful shopping. It's very modern, yet it still retains an old world Arabic feel with it's many souks and traditional shopping areas.

It's unlike any ocean resort I've ever visited - it's miserably hot and humid in the summer, so it's best to go in the relatively cooler months of October - March.

Dubai is also known for it's golf courses - for those of us in other parts of the Middle East, the fact that Dubai's golf courses have grass instead of sand is a pretty big deal.

Americans are received very well - Dubai is a tourist area and therefore very tolerant of Westerners in general. As a female, I'm quite comfortable there and I feel free to do as I wish.

Hi,
dubai is the best place to visit in the Gulf Area. U have plenty of choises to do from shopping to Resturants to night clubs to sports. Americans are very welcomed there and treated like VIP. It is a safe place to be but don't attempt to go there in summer from June to September as it is very very hot and Humid. I think now is the best time to visit or at Christmas time.

Hi. My wife and I had a great trip to Dubai in March last year. We had a bit of fun at the beach, got to see the beautiful hotel Burj Al Arab, went shopping in the souk's, walked around in town looking at buildings and people and so on. But at the same time it was different from the other western big cities that I have been to...and not in a negative way.

I have posted a long travelogue together with some pictures on my homepage www.gardkarlsen.com. Feel free to visit it

Regards
Gard

Thanks to all for your replies, Dubai sounds quite interesting. I've been researching air and hotel info and am considering a visit in a year or so. Hopefully these turbulent world events will have passed by then and we'll be able to travel to the mid-east with a little less fear.
